A Message From Mrs. Latto About Internet Advertising

Dear Parents,

It has come to our attention that some of the free websites that are linked on Ms. Pulido’s web page contain pop-up advertisements that may possibly be inappropriate. This is not consistent for all Internet users.

In order to avoid this possibility you can put free parental control software on your computer which is also available on Ms. Pulido’s web page. This control will block out everything that might be inappropriate for children.

Her web page which contains recommended links for research can be found at:

Please note that whenever free sights are available which contain very valuable resources, advertisement is likely to occur.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 718-423-8333.

Last Call for Yearbook Photos, Grades 1-4

Believe it or not, we are almost ready to close out the yearbook pages for grades K through 4. If you have any field trip photos, classroom or other candids, please send them to or send them in to school in your child’s backpack, addressed to Mary Bow. Be sure to put your name on any print you send in, so we can return it.

We also need the last of the baby photos — we’ll be contacting a few parents individually about the ones we’re missing at this point.

Fifth grade pages will be done last, but if you have any pictures of events so far this year, please also send them in.

Events Update: Week of January 27

Dear Families,

The snow played a bit of havoc with the schedule last week, so here’s what you need to know for this week:

- Family Math Night has been rescheduled to tomorrow night, Monday the 27th, from 6:30 to 8 pm. Come on down to the school auditorium for grade-by-grade workshops that will help you find out more about how your child is learning math.

- Tuesday night is the IEP workshop, starting at 7pm.

- Wednesday night is the Fifth Grade Theater Arts performance – bring your stars to the school at 6:45 pm SHARP (no earlier, no later). The show starts promptly at 7 and will be over by 7:30.

- Friday is “Change Your Name Day” at school – remind your children to think of what alternate identity they’d like to assume for a day.

See you at school!

Special Messages From Mrs. Latto

Dear Parents,

I am writing to inform you that we will enhance our Global Connect system (our ROBO calls that usually come
from Mary Bow) to include contacting you via texting and e-mail in addition to the phone calls that you get at
home and or on your cell.

In order for you to get this information, you have to provide us with a cell number and/or an e-mail address.
Some of you already have this information in our system but many do not.

I want to reinforce a safety procedure that we have in place with regard to signing in at the security desk.
- Photo ID must be presented.
- You must wear the yellow ID label throughout your time here.
- Return the ID to the security desk when you leave and sign out.

Visitors may only leave through the main entrance after returning the yellow pass.

Thanks for your attention to these two important matters. Please return the tear-off slip if you are providing an
updated cell number and/or an e-mail address. (Once this system is in place you should receive messages
through all of these methods. If you don’t, it means we don’t have the information and you might want to
provide it. Please print very neatly.

International Night Planning, Family Math Night, and Family Fun Night

Dear Families,

We hope you enjoyed your nice long weekend and are ready for the coming snow and cold. We’ve got a few things for you to know about this week:

- Tomorrow, Tuesday, at 7 pm is the first meeting of the International Night Committee. We need volunteers, and lots of them! There is SO much work involved in planning and carrying out International Night, and we need all hands on deck. Please come to the meeting if you can, or call Julie Douveas at 347-453-3856 to find out more about volunteering.

-Wednesday, January 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm is Family Math Night — come on down to the school auditorium for grade-by-grade workshops that will help you find out more about how your child is learning math.

- Friday is our annual Family Fun Night (previously known as the annual carnival… it’s a long story…). We need volunteers to help run the game booths and refreshment stands during both school hours (9:00 pm to 2:30 pm and evening hours (6:00 pm to 8:30 pm). Any hours are appreciated. Please call Kim D’Angelo (917) 846-7782 or return the tear-off on the flyer that went home last week. (It’s available here on the web site as well.) Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all volunteers, and feel free to bring your pre-schoolers with you.

Of course, that also means it’s our annual Blood Drive — our goal this year is 50 pints, and you can help us get there. We’ll be set up to take donations starting at 3:30 pm, running through 8pm. Let us know if you’re able to donate, and we’ll come get you from the gym if you want to attend the carnival while you’re waiting. Use the form that went home in backpacks to schedule an appointment (you can get it here on the web site, as well); we will be able to accommodate walk-ins if we’re not too busy. Don’t miss it!

See you at school – get your boots ready again!

Nominate a Teacher

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I’m sure we’re all looking forward to tomorrow’s return to school, yes? Let’s hope the snow holds out until everyone is home all safe and warm tomorrow evening.

As you return your students to school, think about nominating one of our outstanding teachers for a Big Apple Award. Nominations are now open, with the NYC Department of Education seeking nominations for outstanding teachers with exceptional skills. Winners receive a classroom grant for their students and schools, and participate in monthly meetings where they can share their insights with the DOE and other teachers.

If your child has (or had) an outstanding teacher, consider submitting a nomination. More information and the online nomination form can be found here.

See you at school – bundle up!

APB on Field Trip Photos for Yearbook

Dear Fifth-Grade Parents,

Hope you had a wonderful break, and that everyone finished their holiday homework assignments!

The yearboook committee has been hard at work planning the 2014 edition of Passages, and we need your help. First, if you haven’t sent in your child’s baby picture, please do so. The baby pictures are not just for the yearbook, but also for the video presentation at the graduation ceremony. We’re only missing a few at this point, but we don’t want anyone left out. Send them in to your child’s class parent, or email them to Mary Bow at Be sure to include your child’s name, either written on the back of the photo or in the file name of the electronic image.

Second, we need your photos of events over the past six years. If you chaperoned a field trip and took photos, please send them in! Right now we’re relying on Mary Bow’s fabulous inventory of photos, but Mary doesn’t go on field trips so we’re short on those.

Medieval Times is the biggest gap in our photo gallery right now. Parents who chaperoned that trip last year, please dig into your albums and electronic archives and find some photos. We know that Medieval Times is one of the most memorable experiences for our students, and we want to be sure to include it in the yearbook.

If you can believe it, we have our first deadline with the yearbook publisher NEXT WEEK. Deadlines come fast and furious after that, so we need to make haste. Please help us by finding more photos, so we can put together a truly great yearbook for our kids.

If you have photos to submit, email them to Please tell us what the photos show, and we’ll get back to you with any questions.

Thanks, and Happy New Year!
