Meet the Teacher and other September Reminders

meet the teacher 2014

Dear PS 41 Families,

The school year is off to a good start! Let’s keep the momentum going. Tuesday, September 16th is “Meet the Teacher Night” from 4:30-7:30 PM. Hear about the exciting year of learning that lies ahead for your child. Classroom teachers will present an overview of the curriculum in three identical sessions held at: 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 PM. Cluster teachers (Science, Music, Art, Gym and Computers) will hold sessions every half-hour from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. For further details, please refer to the pink flyer sent home in your child’s backpack last week.

The involvement and dedication of our parents help make PS 41 unique. The tireless efforts of our PS 41 families enable us to organize fun events throughout the year that provide our children with a strong sense of community and school spirit. Please join us at our first PTA Meeting on Thursday, September 18th at 7 PM. Find out what’s coming up.

All parents are invited to the annual “Welcome Back Parents’ Breakfast”. Enjoy breakfast with fellow parents and PTA members in an informal setting. Share your ideas with others and see how you can make a difference in your child’s experience at PS 41.

  • Friday, September 19th at 8:15-9:45 AM for Grades K-2 parents (location: cold lunchroom)
  • Friday, October 3rd at 8:15-9:45 AM for Grades 3-5 parents (location to be announced)

Important Message From Mrs. Latto

September 4, 2014

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the start of another exciting school year here at P.S. 41.  I hope you had an enjoyable summer.

Back in June I sent home a letter that outlined a few very important changes here at the school and I would like to remind you of what those changes are.  As a result of the new NYC teacher’s contract, our school hours have officially changed.  All of the schools in the city were required to have start times no earlier than 8:00 AM and no later than 8:20 AM.  (Some schools already had an 8:20 AM time and therefore there was no need for them to change.)

Every day, Monday through Friday, school hours are 8:00 AM to 2:20 PM.

• Students in grades K-2 should report to the auditorium at 7:50 AM

• Students in grades 3-5 should report to the cold lunchroom at 7:50 AM

• Breakfast (which is free for all students) will be served in the hot lunchroom at 7:30 AM

We do not offer supervision of students or school security any earlier than 7:30 AM, so please be mindful of that when you drop your children off.

I am planning on recreating some form of the extended day program which served the needs of some of our students. This program will likely take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:20 PM to 3:20 PM and will differ from any previous extended day program your child may have attended.  I will reach out as soon as I have further details to share.  Unfortunately, busing will not be provided.

Also, I conducted meetings with all of my teachers in June to determine which students could benefit from academic intervention services or acceleration. All recommendations are based on a variety of assessments that were administered throughout the 2013-2014 school year.  We will offer:

• AIS (academic intervention services) in math and/or literacy.

• Acceleration classes in math and/or literacy.

• Apprentice program, which is our small group enrichment program.

If there are any questions I can be reached at 718-423-8333 or through email at . As always, I look forward to another great year of learning here at P.S. 41Q.
