October 30, 2014

Dear Parents,

The New York City Department of Education has introduced new elementary school report cards this year. Teachers now enter grades online and report cards are then printed. Teachers also select from a menu of relevant pre-approved comments that the DOE has provided. Ultimately, the new report cards look different than what you may have experienced in the past.

If you are interested in learning more about the new report cards, please join us. Mrs. Latto and Mr. Ferrara will show samples of the new report cards and explain the attributes so that you may have a better understanding before report cards are distributed.

Sincerely,

Sari Latto
Principal

Remember you can always check out the online calendar – if your family already uses Google Calendar you can integrate the school calendar with your own – no more double entries!

National Walk to School Day (and More)

Dear P.S. 41 Families,

We hope all of you are settling in nicely to the new school year. Fall is really in the air now, and we have lots of activity on tap for October. The school calendar went home in backpacks last week, and you can always check out important dates online on our PS41 school calendar. (If you already use Google calendar, remember you can add the PS 41 calendar to yours, so you always have dates handy.)

Here’s what’s coming up:

OCT 8
This Wednesday is National Walk to School Day. This year we are partnering with the national organization, which is mobilizing millions of kids to use their feet instead of riding in cars for one day. Students who walk (all or part of the way) to school that day, or who ride the bus, will get a sticker as they arrive, and we’ll tally up which class had the best participation. The class with the most walkers will win a special prize! (Pledge forms will be going home in backpacks tomorrow, but you can also get it here on the site.) Download the Walk to School Day Pledge Form

OCT 10
Friday is the annual Harvest Bake Sale, featuring all kinds of baked goods (as well as alternatives for students who prefer non-edible treats). Please bring in your donations of baked good on Friday morning, and send your children in with a few dollars for a special treat. For more information, contact Julie Douveas (jdouveas@hotmail.com).

OCT 13
Columbus Day – no school!

OCT 16
Picture Day – be sure to send your child in with the portrait order form filled out already.
It’s also the October PTA meeting, where we will honor September Students of the Month.
Fifth grade parents – if you’re interested in working on the graduation committee, please attend the first meeting at 6pm, just before the PTA meeting.

OCT 18
It’s the PTA yard sale! Save the date – flyers will go home in backpacks soon.

There’s a lot more coming up later in the month, so keep an eye on the calendar, and we’ll also send reminders.

See you at school!

Coming Events in May and June

Now that the state tests are over (whew!) we have a lot to do in May and June. Here are some important upcoming dates and events.

This Friday, May 9, is our annual Plant Sale, just in time for Mother’s Day. EAch class will do a little shopping for plants, which will be priced from $5 to $15. The schedule showing what times the classes will be shopping is herein case you missed it in the backpacks.

The Queens Botanical Garden is sponsoring an art contest celebrating the 50th and 75th anniversaries of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fair. It’s called “The Gardens of Tomorrow” and is open to everyone in age categories from 5 to adult. Submissions can be drawings, paintings, videos, photography, and more. The flyer with rules can be found here, along with the entry form.

Mark your calendars for this year’s Hollyrock Brain Challenge Game Show! The daytime edition for the students is on Friday morning, May 16, but the evening Family Challenge has been moved to Tuesday, June 17, from 7-8:30pm. This family night game show is one of our most fun activities, so please save the date and try to make it!

Finally, next Thursday, May 15, is the annual PTA Board election, to be held at the May PTA meeting. Please come and vote for your 2014-15 PTA Executive Board.

See you at school!

Full-Day District 26 Anti-Bullying Conference

“Identifying, Understanding and Addressing Bullying & Cyberbullying” is a special conference being held for District 26 educators, administrators, and parents on Wednesday, February 26, from 8 am to 3 pm. Please see the attached flyer for details.

A Busy Week Before Winter Break!

Dear Families,

This is the last week before our winter break, and there’s a lot going on!

- Don’t forget to send in your child’s selection for the afterschool self-sustaining program. The flyer (2014 Self-sustaining Program Spring) is on the pta41.com site if you need it.
- Tuesday evening is Parent ELA Night, when all the secrets of the English Language Assessment will be revealed. The session is from 6:30 to 8pm. Details are on the flyer (2014 ELA night).
- Thursday evening is Ms. Cilla’s Valentine Craft Workshop from 7-9 pm. You and your child can create a LOVE BUG craft together! Registration form is here:  2014 Valentine Workshop.
- Also Thursday evening, there is a special meeting for parents who have questions or concerns about changes to the gifted and talented program, and the admissions process. See the  handout with information about the meeting: 2014 GT Meeting Feb13

- Friday is a big day – not only is it the last day before the break, it’s also:
Valentine’s Day
The 100th Day of School
RED Day (wear red!)
The Valentine’s Day Bake Sale
Please bring in your donated baked goods in the morning, and remember to give your child a few dollars to spend on treats. As usual, there will be alternatives to the sweet treats (new Smencils in new scents, like cotton candy and bubble gum!) – it wouldn’t be a bake sale without them.

CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL NIGHT VOLUNTEERS!
Please don’t forget to fill out your Volunteer Form for this year’s International Night. This is perhaps our school’s best night, and it takes an army of volunteers to make it work. Remember, due to overcrowding ticket sales will be limited. Volunteers will be able to purchase tickets directly. If there are any tickets remaining after the volunteers have claimed theirs, they will be made available via lottery. Don’t get locked out! The sign-up form is available on the pta41.com web site.2014 INTERNATIONAL NIGHT Volunteer

Finally, please do join your fellow parents for this year’s special PTA Dinner Dance – send in your reservation form if you haven’t yet done so. This is a terrific evening each year, where parents and teachers get to mingle, dine, and dance like adults – no kids! If you haven’t attended in the past, please consider it this year (singles and couples welcome).

See you at school!

Events Update: Week of January 27
