Mrs. Latto Retires; Mr. Ferrara to Become Principal

The last day of the school year was also the end of an era at P.S. 41, as Mrs. Latto retired after 17 years as principal. Assistant Principal Joseph Ferrara will assume the role of principal effective with Mrs. Latto’s retirement.

Students gathered on the front steps of the school at dismissal for one last good-bye to Mrs. Latto:

Last call for boosters!

Dear Families,

We are now officially in the countdown stage to the end of the year! We have two important reminders for you tonight:

- We are closing the final issue of News & Views this week, so this is the last call for boosters! If you would like to send a special message to your graduate, a favorite teacher, or perhaps a certain retiring principal, this is your last chance. See the flyer for specific instructions, and be sure to send this order form in to school with your child tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest. The issue goes to print on Wednesday, so we need all booster orders by first thing Tuesday morning.

- Tomorrow, Monday, is a half day, with an 11:20 am dismissal time. Be sure to pick up your children on time!

- The last day of school is Friday, June 26, which is also a half day with 11:20 dismissal time.

Let the countdown begin!

Class 3-205 Sweeps NYC in the UNICEF KidPower Program

Class 3-205, taught by Cindy Wong and Helen Kim, was named the winner of the UNICEF KidPower program, which combined activity and fitness for our kids with food for undernourished children in Africa. The results were published today in the Queens Courier:

Bayside students stay fit to help feed children in Africa

See Class 3-205 featured on the KidPower web site

See the PS 41 Leaderboard on the KidPower web site

All together, our PS 41 students walked more than 42 million steps (almost 15,000 miles), and donated 3,827 packets of food to children who desperately need them.

Congratulations to all our students, who participated so enthusiastically in this challenge, and to the students all over the city who joined in the effort.

Potential change of school hours for next year

Dear PS 41 Family,

Our PS 41 School Leadership Team is going to make a recommendation to me regarding a potential change in start time and dismissal for the 2015-2016 school year.  We would like to have your feedback regarding this change so that we can take the wishes of the majority of parents into consideration. (See attached start and dismissal times flyer.)

To give you some background, in June of 2014, the DOE required all schools to select from start and dismissal times that are noted below. There was a very short period of time to make the decision and at that time I quickly polled the teachers and we decided on 8:00 AM start and 2:20 PM dismissal.

Now that we have the time and also the experience we can make a thoughtful decision.

The three choices are:

  • 8:00 AM  start time  with  2:20 PM dismissal
  • 8:10 AM  start time with 2:30 PM dismissal
  • 8:20 AM  start time with 2:40 PM dismissal

Please note that MS 158, the school that most of our 5th graders will go to next year, has chosen  8:00 AM  to 2:20 PM as their start and dismissal time for the 2015-2016 school year and that may impact the decision of families who have children in both schools.

Please indicate your choice and send this start and dismissal-times flyer back to school by Friday, March 6 so that we may tally your preferences.  If you have any questions please call me at 718-423-8333.

October 30, 2014

Dear Parents,

The New York City Department of Education has introduced new elementary school report cards this year. Teachers now enter grades online and report cards are then printed. Teachers also select from a menu of relevant pre-approved comments that the DOE has provided. Ultimately, the new report cards look different than what you may have experienced in the past.

If you are interested in learning more about the new report cards, please join us. Mrs. Latto and Mr. Ferrara will show samples of the new report cards and explain the attributes so that you may have a better understanding before report cards are distributed.

Important Message From Mrs. Latto

September 4, 2014

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the start of another exciting school year here at P.S. 41.  I hope you had an enjoyable summer.

Back in June I sent home a letter that outlined a few very important changes here at the school and I would like to remind you of what those changes are.  As a result of the new NYC teacher’s contract, our school hours have officially changed.  All of the schools in the city were required to have start times no earlier than 8:00 AM and no later than 8:20 AM.  (Some schools already had an 8:20 AM time and therefore there was no need for them to change.)

Every day, Monday through Friday, school hours are 8:00 AM to 2:20 PM.

• Students in grades K-2 should report to the auditorium at 7:50 AM

• Students in grades 3-5 should report to the cold lunchroom at 7:50 AM

• Breakfast (which is free for all students) will be served in the hot lunchroom at 7:30 AM

We do not offer supervision of students or school security any earlier than 7:30 AM, so please be mindful of that when you drop your children off.

I am planning on recreating some form of the extended day program which served the needs of some of our students. This program will likely take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:20 PM to 3:20 PM and will differ from any previous extended day program your child may have attended.  I will reach out as soon as I have further details to share.  Unfortunately, busing will not be provided.

Also, I conducted meetings with all of my teachers in June to determine which students could benefit from academic intervention services or acceleration. All recommendations are based on a variety of assessments that were administered throughout the 2013-2014 school year.  We will offer:

• AIS (academic intervention services) in math and/or literacy.

• Acceleration classes in math and/or literacy.

• Apprentice program, which is our small group enrichment program.

If there are any questions I can be reached at 718-423-8333 or through email at . As always, I look forward to another great year of learning here at P.S. 41Q.

Nominate yourself if you’d like to run for any office, or suggest a nominee to the nominating committee.
