Potential change of school hours for next year

Dear PS 41 Family,

Our PS 41 School Leadership Team is going to make a recommendation to me regarding a potential change in start time and dismissal for the 2015-2016 school year.  We would like to have your feedback regarding this change so that we can take the wishes of the majority of parents into consideration. (See attached start and dismissal times flyer.)

To give you some background, in June of 2014, the DOE required all schools to select from start and dismissal times that are noted below. There was a very short period of time to make the decision and at that time I quickly polled the teachers and we decided on 8:00 AM start and 2:20 PM dismissal.

Now that we have the time and also the experience we can make a thoughtful decision.

The three choices are:

  • 8:00 AM  start time  with  2:20 PM dismissal
  • 8:10 AM  start time with 2:30 PM dismissal
  • 8:20 AM  start time with 2:40 PM dismissal

Please note that MS 158, the school that most of our 5th graders will go to next year, has chosen  8:00 AM  to 2:20 PM as their start and dismissal time for the 2015-2016 school year and that may impact the decision of families who have children in both schools.

Please indicate your choice and send this start and dismissal-times flyer back to school by Friday, March 6 so that we may tally your preferences.  If you have any questions please call me at 718-423-8333.

Donations of baked goodies are appreciated; please send them in with your child in the morning.

Attention parents: PS41’s News & Views needs you! The quarterly PTA newsletter that chronicles life and events at PS41 needs volunteers to help produce the publication. Be a part of this fun project! Contact: Schiro Withanachchi (dham.schiro@gmail.com), Margaret Foley (margaretafoley@verizon.net), or Jennifer Toy (cell: 718-309-9038). Look out for the first issue, coming soon in your child’s backpack.

The Blackboard Awards for Schools and Principals are coming up. Nominate your school and/or principal for the 2014 Blackboard Award, but hurry, the deadline for your nomination is Nov 10th. Click here for details.

Don’t forget to return your Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collections via personal check, money order or Coinstar receipts. This campaign was to introduce children to the idea that they can make a difference globally. See the flyer that came home with the little orange UNICEF trick-or-treat boxes.

The annual Penny Harvest has begun, please start collecting and bringing in those pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. See how we can make a difference by helping local charities.

National Walk to School Day (and More)

Dear P.S. 41 Families,

We hope all of you are settling in nicely to the new school year. Fall is really in the air now, and we have lots of activity on tap for October. The school calendar went home in backpacks last week, and you can always check out important dates online on our PS41 school calendar. (If you already use Google calendar, remember you can add the PS 41 calendar to yours, so you always have dates handy.)

Here’s what’s coming up:

This Wednesday is National Walk to School Day. This year we are partnering with the national organization, which is mobilizing millions of kids to use their feet instead of riding in cars for one day. Students who walk (all or part of the way) to school that day, or who ride the bus, will get a sticker as they arrive, and we’ll tally up which class had the best participation. The class with the most walkers will win a special prize! (Pledge forms will be going home in backpacks tomorrow, but you can also get it here on the site.) Download the Walk to School Day Pledge Form

OCT 10
Friday is the annual Harvest Bake Sale, featuring all kinds of baked goods (as well as alternatives for students who prefer non-edible treats). Please bring in your donations of baked good on Friday morning, and send your children in with a few dollars for a special treat. For more information, contact Julie Douveas (jdouveas@hotmail.com).

OCT 13
Columbus Day – no school!

OCT 16
Picture Day – be sure to send your child in with the portrait order form filled out already.
It’s also the October PTA meeting, where we will honor September Students of the Month.
Fifth grade parents – if you’re interested in working on the graduation committee, please attend the first meeting at 6pm, just before the PTA meeting.

OCT 18
It’s the PTA yard sale! Save the date – flyers will go home in backpacks soon.

There’s a lot more coming up later in the month, so keep an eye on the calendar, and we’ll also send reminders.

See you at school!

It’s Back to School Time!

It will be a fun way to cool off and celebrate the new school year. Enjoy a delicious frozen treat while meeting fellow students, parents, teachers, and staff. All are welcome; remember to bring some friends as well. Pesso’s will donate a portion of this evening’s proceeds to our school. See the flyer for full details.

For parents of children who took the state tests last spring (including recent graduates), test scores are now available on ARIS (arisparentlink.org). For graduates going on to MS 158, ARIS also shows sixth grade class assignments. If anyone needs help with their child’s ARIS login, please contact Mary Bow at MBow@schools.nyc.gov.

Our Garden Needs Your Help This Summer!

Most of you are familiar with Project Oasis, which creates and maintains our beautiful school garden. Our children work hard to create and maintain flower beds, and they learn the joys of watching our plants grow and thrive under their care. Unfortunately, over the summer our garden will wither unless it has regular watering. That’s why each summer we ask families to pitch in by taking responsibility for watering during one week in either July or August.

All that’s involved is stopping by the school during your assigned week – usually only once, twice if it’s extremely hot – and giving all our garden beds their much-needed watering. It’s a great way to help the school even as you show your children the importance of ongoing care for living things.

The volunteer flyer is posted here: Project Oasis Watering Letter Please fill it out and return it to Kim D’Angelo if you can take a week over the summer – just let Kim know when you’re not available and she’ll find you an open slot. Please do consider helping out – we want our garden to be even more beautiful in September when the students return than it is now!

The Last Update of the School Year

Dear Families,

We are headed for the finish line on the 2013-14 school year – another year gone by in the blink of an eye. Here are some final reminders for the week:

The final day of school for all students (yes, even our graduates!) is Thursday, June 26. That’s a half day, with noon dismissal.

Fifth graders (aka grads) will be treated to a pizza party for lunch on Wednesday, followed by the distribution of the yearbook. Don’t miss Yearbook Day!

Teachers are getting the school supply lists for the 2014-15 year ready now, and they will be available soon on the web site. So when August comes around and you can’t find the list that came home in your child’s backpack, you’ll be able to find it online.

Finally, for parents of students in grades 3 through 5, state test results will be available later in the summer. You’ll need to log on to Aris ParentLink to see the results, so if you don’t have your Aris login info handy this is the week to get it from Mary Bow. Go to https://arisparentlink.org/parentlink and make sure you can log in. If you can’t, contact Mary Bow this week for help. MBow@schools.nyc.gov

Have a happy and healthy summer, and we’ll see you in the fall for another great year!
